Methane Matters: How to apply the climate impact brake

10:00 – 11:30 Uhr

This side event will highlight how targeted CH4 reductions in the relevant sectors can dramatically improve the global outlook for climate, pollution and health.
But we are faced with the difficult task of taking action. Putting methane on the agenda of political decision-makers has been achieved to some extent through the establishment of the GMP. However, sector-specific regulations, such as the EU Methane Regulation, are not enough, as the other sectors, in particular agriculture and waste management, must also make their contribution to methane reduction.
There are suitable measures in all sectors that could contribute to methane reduction, but there is still a lack of a concrete methane reduction target and a guideline on how this reduction could be implemented. As a Global Methane Champion, Germany can and should lead the way here in order to live up to its claim.
In particular, a methane reduction plan is one option for exerting a targeted influence on the development of methane emissions. We want to discuss how such a plan should be designed so that it can have an impact internally and be seen externally by the EU and other countries as a suitable means of reducing methane emissions. This is the only way to generate pressure on the important issue of methane reduction and significantly reduce methane emissions in relevant sectors by 2030.

• What can Methane Champions do to lead on the Global Methane Pledge?
• How to drive methane emissions reductions across all sectors?
• What be done to support global south countries to reach the GMP targets?
