Strengthening the resilience of coastal communities: How people, nature and climate benefit from conservation, restoration and sustainable management of carbon-rich coastal ecosystems.
Carbon-rich coastal ecosystems such as mangrove forests, saltmarshes and seagrass meadows offer humankind various services. They protect our coastlines, act as biodiversity hotspots, provide food for millions of people, offer a wide array of health benefits, and remove CO2 from the atmosphere, helping us to mitigate climate change.
Conserving, restoring and sustainably managing these carbon-rich coastal ecosystems is vital not only for climate change adaptation. It also increases the resilience of coastal communities and may help stop further losses in marine biodiversity.
In this solution-oriented event, we will discuss successful management strategies and best practices jointly developed by scientific and local or indigenous experts with policy-makers, scientific advisors, and representatives of coastal communities actively involved in the conservation, restoration, and management of carbon-rich coastal ecosystems. We will showcase lessons learned and project outcomes to motivate broader action and highlight the urgently needed synergies for climate, biodiversity, and human well-being in coastal regions and beyond.
